George Russell will start the Singapore Grand Prix from the back of the grid after Mercedes confirmed a power unit penalty stemming from his engine failure at the Malaysian Grand Prix, team principal Toto Wolff announced ahead of the Marina Bay Circuit race weekend.

The penalty compounds what Wolff described as “a very difficult weekend” in Malaysia, where the Silver Arrows suffered a significant performance drop that the team is still working to understand. Russell had been on course for a strong result before the engine failure ended his race prematurely.

“George has the added challenge of a power unit penalty, which will mean starting from the back of the grid on Sunday, following the engine failure in Malaysia,” Wolff said. “That is particularly frustrating given the way he drove last weekend and the result he deserved to be fighting for. Unfortunately, these things are part of the sport and our focus now is on giving him the best possible car and opportunities to fight back through the field.”

Beyond managing Russell’s grid penalty, Mercedes arrives in Singapore with a broader technical agenda. The team will run both its latest update package and its previous specification simultaneously across the weekend in an effort to diagnose the performance deficit that emerged at Sepang.

“We have identified several areas we need to investigate further, but F1 doesn’t offer simple answers and we need more evidence before drawing firm conclusions,” Wolff said. “The characteristics of the circuit are very different and that will help us build a clearer picture of where we are.”

Singapore also marks the final Sprint weekend of the 2026 season, adding further urgency to the team’s objectives. Wolff stressed the importance of extracting maximum points from the format while continuing the team’s technical investigation.

“We need to maximise this final Sprint weekend of the year, keep learning, and score the strongest result we can with both cars,” he said. “Singapore will be an important test of our understanding and our resilience as a team.”
