The Audi Revolut F1 Team has profiled IT Race Infrastructure Engineer Khawla as part of its ongoing “All for One” editorial series, offering a rare look at the mission control operations in Neuburg that keep the team’s trackside and factory communications running during race weekends.
Khawla, who transitioned to the Formula 1 program from Audi AG’s broader network infrastructure division, is responsible for maintaining the critical IT systems that connect the team’s Neuburg headquarters to the racetrack in real time. Her role places her at the center of race operations, where failures in software, communications, or internet connectivity could have immediate consequences for on-track performance.
“Imagine the software monitoring the power unit stops working, or there is a communications failure between mission control and the race team, or the Internet connection fails. We are there to prevent or fix any of these IT failures,” Khawla said in the team’s official profile.
Her path to Formula 1 was built on years of systems and network support experience within the Audi parent organization. “Before joining the team in Neuburg, I worked on AUDI AG’s network infrastructure, so I already knew the level of quality expected,” she said. “When the opportunity came to join Audi Formula Racing, it felt like the perfect next step, combining my experience with a completely new, fast-paced environment.”
The demands of the role differ sharply from conventional IT positions. During race weeks, Khawla and her team operate from mission control, ensuring uninterrupted data flow while engineers and strategists rely on real-time information to make split-second decisions. “Prioritisation is key. I constantly need to decide what’s most important at any given moment, while staying closely aligned with the team,” she said.
Despite not traveling to circuits, Khawla described a deep sense of connection to the on-track action. “Honestly, it’s exactly that immediacy. In many IT jobs, you only see the results much later. Here, everything is live and if something breaks, you see it instantly,” she said. “The work can be stressful, but in a very exciting way.”
Khawla framed her contribution as part of the broader infrastructure that fans rarely see but that underpins every lap. “This sport is all about speed, precision, and teamwork. Fans often assume the team’s perception only applies to what they see on-track, but what’s on the track is the result of what happens behind the scenes,” she said. “Reliable IT is like an invisible backbone; when everything works, you feel part of something much bigger. We really race as one team.”
