Alpine left Singapore without a championship point after a weekend marred by mechanical failures, a Sprint retirement and a race finish just outside the top ten, the team confirmed in an official recap.
Pierre Gasly qualified seventh for the main race — aided by a grid penalty for George Russell — after what the Frenchman described as one of his best Q3 performances of the year, a lap he said required him to touch a few walls to extract the maximum from the car. Despite that strong grid position, Gasly lost places at the start, became mired in the midfield and crossed the line eleventh, one position outside the points, on a one-stop strategy from Mediums to Softs.
Franco Colapinto’s weekend was more troubled. The Argentine qualified fifteenth after running wide at the exit of Turn 17 in Q3 qualifying, tapping the wall and missing the top-ten shootout. He made a strong start to the race, gaining positions on the opening lap, but retired after just 29 laps when a suspected driveline issue brought his car to a halt at Turn 7.
The mechanical problems began during the Sprint. An intense thunderstorm delayed the shortened race by half an hour, forcing the entire field onto Intermediates for a standing start. Both Gasly and Colapinto made clean getaways and ran side-by-side through the first corner, but a Safety Car was deployed almost immediately after Russell spun out of the lead at the final corner. While running behind the Safety Car, Colapinto’s car lost power and shut down, requiring an Energy Store change before he could return for Qualifying later that evening.
Gasly also suffered a loss of power on the straights during the Sprint but remained in contention, executing a late-braking move on Esteban Ocon’s Haas across the Anderson Bridge into Turn 13 on the final lap. The earlier power issues limited him to ninth place, one position outside the Sprint points.
Singapore hosted its first-ever Sprint weekend, adding to the complexity of a race already regarded as one of the most physically demanding on the calendar, with the 4.9-kilometre street circuit combining intense heat and humidity. In Sprint Qualifying, Colapinto reached SQ2 and set a competitive final lap but was bumped out of the top ten when Russell went faster, leaving him eleven-hundredths of a second — 0.094s — behind Gasly, who advanced to SQ3 before struggling for grip on the Soft compound and finishing tenth.
“It has been a tough few weekends and we have come away without any points,” Colapinto said in the team’s official statement. “We have lost ground in the championship, but with the pace we have in the car, we remain hopeful of being able to compete and fight for points in the remaining races. The next triple-header is a part of the year I look forward to the most where we race in the Americas, closer to home, and I can really feel the energy of the fans. We will keep pushing and won’t give up on our objective as a team.”
The Singapore round concluded a triple-header that also included stops in Kuala Lumpur. Alpine now turns its attention to the next run of three consecutive races in Austin, Mexico City and São Paulo.
